Build a Team

Do you know anyone who says “If you want something done right you have to do it yourself?”

Does that person have a lot of free time, or are they always busy and stressed?

Have you ever heard the saying “Anything worth doing can’t be done alone?”

The night I found out that I have Multiple Sclerosis (MS), my fiance agreed to marry me anyway so long as I agreed to do everything I could do to look after myself, in spite of my MS. Between the lines of that statement she was agreeing to be a member of my team and help with three important things that all teams should do, in my opinion. She was agreeing to push me, by insisting I do what I could, to help me to do the things I couldn’t do, and to love me. All things that I think are essential for a good team. I suggest you build a team to:

  • Push you, like parents, coaches, and mentors do, in order to get the most you can out of yourself.  Did you always like your coaches? I know I didn’t! Were you better at your sport because of them? You probably were. Why not build that advantage into your team?
  • Help you, like your medical team, parents, technical experts, and assistants do, to help by doing the things you can’t do, or that it doesn’t make sense for you to do. John Maxwell is an evangelical Christian author, speaker, and pastor who has written more than 60 books, primarily focusing on leadership. John says, you should do what is required of you, what gives me the greatest return, and what is most rewarding. Why not delegate everything else to a team member? Do you need to let go of some things?
  • Love you, like your spouse, family and friends do.  Jim Rohn was an American entrepreneur, author and motivational speaker. His work influenced many in the personal development industry. Jim said that your friends are the people who know everything about you, and still like you! Why is it important to have people on your team who like or love you? I believe it is important because it boosts your sense of worth, and low self worth is a barrier that many of us struggle to get past.
